Intro

Hello! I am Tobin Wainer. I graduated from the University of Utah in May of 2021 with an Honors Bachelors of Science in Physics and Astronomy. I took a post-baccalaureate researcher with Dr. Gail Zasowski at the University of Utah and am now a graduate student at the Universit of Washington primarily working with Dr. Ben Williams.

Research

I began conducting research with Dr. Cliff Johnson at Northwestern University and CIERA, and Dr. Anil Seth at the University of Utah on two projects which you can read about below. My post-bacc was spent working with Dr. Gail Zasowski at the University of Utah, and in my first year of Graduate school at the University of Washington I am working with Dr. Ben Williams.

Star Clusters in M33

Our main goal was to construct a catalog of Star Clusters in the Triangulum Galaxy(M33) using data from the Hubble Space Telescope. We used the Citizen Science platform hosted by zooniverse.org to conduct a visual search for star clusters. Because star clusters are a key tool to studying star formation at different epochs, this catalog will be the basis of gaining usefull information about one of our nearest galactic neighbors.

Here is an example of a Hubble Space Telescope image that a volunteer would view and try to identify clusters, and on the right is where volunteers said clusters were located.

This star cluster catalog was the basis for my next project, measuring and analysing the star cluster mass function of M33. The star cluster mass function provides valuable insights into how large star cluster can be in a galaxy, which we found to be consistent with the local star forming rates. In addition, we analyzed how impactful individual star cluster mass uncertainties are in measuring the cluster mass function.

On the left is the distribution of star cluster masses in M33, with the best-fit mass function parameters overploted, and the right plot shows a clear coorelation between the truncation mass of a galaxy's cluster mass function and that galaxy's star formation.

Ensemble Variability

I am involved in analyzing time series star cluster data from TESS to characterize the variabilty of their ensemble light curves. For this work, I developed a pipeline to derive and analyze an ensemble light curve.

Walk through of the effects each correction mechanisms has on the light curves for NGC 330. The left column are light curves for pixels inside the cluster radius, where the cluster radius is visualized by the green circle in the right column. The right column shows normalized individual pixel light curves at the 1700th time step, where the 1700th time step corresponds to the green vertical line in the left panel. We include a flux map, in the first row to show the representative brightness of the cluster compared to the surrounding field. The first row in the raw data, while the second row is the light curves resulting from the incorporation of the PCA corrector for background sources, and the spline corrector. The third row is the final light curve, which incorporates PCA, spline, and the CBV's.
